Christian Marien Quartett

Tobias Delius – Tenorsaxophon, Klarinette

Jasper Stadhouders – Gitarre

Antonio Borghini – Kontrabass

Christian Marien – Schlagzeug

Frei nach Ornette Coleman: Beauty is a rare thing.

Music has the power to find on smaller scale what we are searching for in the big picture: to be free, take the moment as it comes, and to know that only together will we arrive at that other place for which we are longing. Like Ornette Coleman said: Beauty is a rare thing.

With Tobias Delius, Jasper Stadhouders and Antonio Borghini, the newly-founded Christian Marien Quartet gathers ensouled masters whose musical performance perfectly embodies this spirit. This is the first self-directed ensemble from the Berlin-based drummer and the first to appear under his name. Improvisation stands central to the sound of this new group, yet Christian Marien’s compositions play a significant role, always waiting to be rediscovered and reinvented.

Schlagzeug Solo: „The Sun Has Set, the Drums Are Beating“

Hannes Schweiger, freiStil_104 Nov/Dez 2022

„Even when the sun has set, this drumming shines. A solo effort with unique selling points.“ Hannes Schweiger, freiStil_104 Nov/Dez 2022

The New York City Jazz Record, September 2022: recommended new releases, Laurence Donohue-Greene, Managing Editor

The release of this solo CD fulfils a 30 year old dream. The initial inspiration came from a solo concert of Pierre Favre in the summer of 1990 and the release of the CD „Raum – Musik für Solo Schlagzeug” by my first drum teacher, Ben Bönniger in 1994.

In 2018 the conceptual idea became clear and it was finally time to put the plan into action. Within half a year, from the first sketches to the final recording process, a number of compositions came into being. Four of these pieces appear on the album. In their essence, these pieces are condensed improvisations which were repeatedly recorded and further developed in the rehearsal room, eventually evolving into compositions which are defined in form, sound and orchestration yet leave ample space for improvisation.

All pieces were recorded live without edits or overdubs in September 2018 at RecPublica Studios in Lubrza/Poland.

Superimpose

Matthias Müller – trombone
Christian Marien – drums

Superimpose is ONE sound – Matthias Müller and Christian Marien have been developing their collaborative research into sound since 2006 – incorporating concerts in Europe, USA, and Australia, and an intensive rehearsal process that forms the basis of a clarity, depth and connectivity in their playing. Their improvisations are the result of two independant voices – acting, fusing, diverging and shifting, and cutting their own ways whilst moving in the same direction – this symbiosis redefining boundaries and roles, and creating ONE distinctive sound.

All of this has been documented on two CDs („Superimpose“ Creative Sources 2006, and „Talk Talk“ Leo Records 2009) and the LP „Edinburgh“, released in 2015 on Wide Ear Records. As part of their 10th anniversary they hosted a series of concerts titled „Superimpose & Guests“, from which further recordings with John Butcher, Nate Wooley and Sofia Jernberg will be released in 2019.

I Am Three & Me

Maggie Nicols – voice

Silke Eberhard – altosax

Nikolaus Neuser – trumpet

Christian Marien – drums

In the wake of hugely successful CD „I AM THREE,“ The Music of Charles Mingus, the trio invited Maggie Nicols to further explore his music. Mingus, the poet. From loving quotes to ironic breaking, from homage to deconstruction, from historic reminiscence to an expression of the current state. With this recording the collective „I am Three & Me“ simultaneously moves closer and away from Mingus, resulting in a present-day reflection. „Music is life, magic, spirit, healing, liberation, communication, an international language beyond words“ (Maggie Nicols).

CRANES

Matthias Müller – Posaune

Eve Risser – Piano

Christian Marien – Schlagzeug

This is a brand new project, a European collaboration, powerful and sensitive at the same time. Three outstanding improvisers from Germany and France are joining long-standing musical ties and starting a project of networked sound experiments and discursive form finding.

Matthias Müller and Eve Risser have regularly played together in Eve’s different big ensembles, e.g. the new RED DESERT ORCHESTRA. Christian Marien and Eve played first together at the Moers Festival in 2015 at the legendary Morning Sessions. And Christian and Matthias have a musical relationship that goes back more than 15 years in different constellations, especially in the duo SUPERIMPOSE and the trio THE ASTRONOMICAL UNIT with bassist Clayton Thomas from Australia.

CRANES‘ debut CD „Formation<Deviation“ was released beginning of 2021 on Relative Pitch Records.

C’mon C’mon

Jasper Stadhouders – guitar

Christian Marien – drums

Christian and Jasper met a few years ago in Berlin, started playing improvised duo sessions and felt immediate musical kinship. This kinship was reinforced by Christian starting his quartet (with Tobias Delius, Antonio Borghini and Jasper). Playing Christian’s compositions, it became clear to Jasper that they both had very similar, overlapping ideas and interests in a certain rhythmic language. They both sparked each other’s enthusiasm to start a duo in which they explore and develop this realm. They co-compose long form poly-rhythmic pieces full of multi-tempo shifts and modulations. For Jasper, it was also the perfect situation to explore alternate tunings on the guitar, tuning his strings based on the sounding pitch of Christian’s drums (which is hidden in a cloud of complex overtones) in order to reinforce and emphasize the common resonance between the two instruments. The resulting music is hypnotically propulsive, yet full of unexpected shifts and twists and highly elastic.

The Astronomical Unit

Matthias Müller – trombone

Clayton Thomas – bass

Christian Marien – drums

The Astronomical Unit was formed in 2007, when Clayton Thomas moved from Australia to Berlin. At that point Matthias Müller and Christian Marien had already worked as a duo for several years. The duos density and Thomas‘ distinctive way of playing was the starting point from which the trio quickly developed an independant contemporary approach to improvised music: The Astronomical Unit perform music, that almost sounds composed. They channelize the free musical flow into formal and structural clearness. One can tell that they are conscious of the tradition of American freejazz and European improvisation, but The Astronomical Unit keep reinventing themselves and question musical agreements.

Their debut CD „Relativity“ was released on „Jazzwerkstatt“ (Berlin) 2010. The second CD „Super Earth“ was released on „Gligg Records“ in 2013.
